About

Defne Tesal and Murat Yildiz will have a small exhibition Keeping The Trace towards the end of their residency in KulttuuriKauppila. They will be sharing their works and processes from the residency period. They are working on couple of different projects.

You will see Defne Tesal’s ‘Notebook’ series where she keeps track of her time spent in Ii. They are intense records ranging from daily routines such as what she had eaten or whom she had contact each day to natural events such as sun rise/set times, temperature or moon phases. Also in these ‘Notebooks’ you will see her drawings and photographs derived from those recordings. Apart from this project there will be a ‘Dream Sequence’ series of small weavings inspired by her dreaming records. And lastly, ‘Memory Bricks’ where she uses all the things she gathered while staying in Ii. The things that represent her memories about here. She uses these materials together with plaster to make adobe bricks, memory bricks…

Murat Yildiz, on the other hand, will show his large scale drawings on paper which are detailed and meditative. Also you will see a project about Ii. In this project he is collecting the projections of Ii. When he first came to the residency, he went all around the town and in total put 48 blank A5 papers around Ii. These blank papers are scattered around. Some are hidden in the forest, some near the road, some in the super market, school, residency, under a stone, beneath the ground, inside the river… Just before the exhibition he re-collected them to show the ‘Traces of Ii’ at the KulttuuriKauppila Art Center. All the blank papers now have their own drawings on them made by the town, the nature, rain, snow, people, wind… His plan is to take them back with him to Istanbul and make an artist book using the papers together with photos and maps of where they all have spent their time for nearly 2 months…

Throughout this two-and-a-half-month residency both artists are working on the concepts of time, memory and trace as well as producing instinct based works.
